Welcome to Poker

Poker is a game of skill, strategy, and psychology. Whether you're playing online, at a casino, or with friends at home, this lesson covers everything you need to get started.

2-10 Players

Texas Hold'em works best with 6-8 players at a table

52-Card Deck

Standard deck with 4 suits: hearts, diamonds, clubs, spades

Chips or Money

Use poker chips or play with virtual money online

Dealer Button

Rotates each hand to determine blinds and betting order

The Goal of Poker

The goal is to win chips by either making the best 5-card hand at showdown or by betting in a way that forces all other players to fold. You don't need the best hand to win — you just need everyone else to give up.

Betting Actions

On your turn, you have four possible actions:

Fold

Discard your cards and exit the hand. You lose any chips already bet.

Call

Match the current bet to stay in the hand.

Raise

Increase the bet amount. Shows strength or tries to win the pot immediately.

Check

Pass the action without betting (only when no bet has been made).

Blinds — Forced Bets

Every hand starts with two forced bets called blinds. These create action and give players something to fight for.

  • Small Blind (SB): The player to the left of the dealer posts half the minimum bet.
  • Big Blind (BB): The next player posts the full minimum bet.
Example: In a $1/$2 game, the small blind is $1 and the big blind is $2. The big blind sets the minimum bet for the first round.

Common Poker Terms

  • Bluff: Betting or raising with a weak hand to make opponents fold.
  • Pot: The total chips in the middle that players are competing for.
  • Hole Cards: Your private cards that only you can see.
  • Community Cards: Shared cards dealt face-up on the table.
  • Showdown: When remaining players reveal their hands to determine the winner.
  • Tilt: Playing emotionally after a bad beat — avoid this at all costs.
Key takeaway: Poker rewards patience and good decisions over time. You don't need to win every hand — just make better decisions than your opponents across many hands.
