Merge Network Traffic Explosion

Merge NetworkThe big news in the online poker world is the pending move to the Merge network of four Cake poker skins.

These poker sites include SportsBook Poker and PlayersOnly Poker. The resultant increase in traffic on the Merge Network is expected to be huge – possibly up to six times the current level – and is predicted to propel the Merge Network into the top 10 of online poker sites by next year.

Currently Merge is ranked 20th in the list of poker rooms by player numbers, with Cake being 10th on the same list. The loss to the Cake network of these rooms will probably be as significant as the gain Merge expects.

Both Cake and Merge take American players, so all else being equal the transition should go smoothly for most existing players.

In order to ensure the success of the transition, there are a number of excellent promotions being offered by Merge skins right now, and these should be taken advantage of by all smart players.

Poker Host is one room on the Merge network that hopes to benefit by the increased players at the network, and they have a number of promotions right now that are geared to make them stand out from competing skins.

Aside from their larger than usual poker deposit bonus of up to $2,000 at 200% deposit match, Poker Host players can also cash in on the current freeroll extravaganza being run as part of the change over preparations.

That expected tsunami of players failed to reach the shores of Merge after all. It seems that most players have had enough of the uncertainty and potential lost bankrolls that playing online from the land of the free entails. Of course, some of those players had their whole online poker funds frozen with the closure of the main US facing poker rooms, so they had little choice but to wait for that mess to be cleared up, and hope that some or all of those funds would be returned to them, in order for them to move to other rooms.

By the time that situation had become a reality, a whole year had passed, and those players that had found themselves in that horrible situation had presumably moved on to better things.

One thing is for sure, the number of playrs to actually hit the Merge Network was either much smaller than was originally reported, and they came but left again rather quickly. Because the ranking of the most popular online poker rooms showed a pre-shutdown Merge ranked 17th most popular room, and one year later that ranking position has crawled up to 16th.

That tells us rather clearly that the explosion simply fizzled out, for whatever reason. I suspect that these players are just too tired to continue to strange fight of trying to play a game online.

Things sure do move fast in the online poker worls at times. It can be like a fulltime job just keeping up with the changes that seem to happen all the time in the poker industry.

Poker rooms close down, new ones open up, new laws are passed, new restrictions are put in place, even paymnet processors close down from time to time.

You might be tempted to just keep you head down and play poker, but it can pay to keep up to date with the latest events. Not losing your bankroll because you knew that your poker room was in trouble would make the effort more than worthwhile.
